About Us
The mission of One Earth Sangha is to support humanity in a transformative response to ecological crises based on the insights and practices of the Buddhist tradition. Through our online programs and network of teachers, we inspire, inform, and guide our members in actions that will end ecological violence and forge a new path of collective well-being. We assert that engagement is both essential to the spiritual path and more effective when grounded in transformative insight. This Position
We’re looking for a volunteer web developer and someone with good tech chops to help keep our WordPress site running smoothly. This might be a good fit for you if …
- You’re excited to contribute a wide range of fixes, new capabilities, replacements, and optimizations that directly support our programs and community.
- You have time and interest to jump in, learn, and bring good things to our community.
- You don’t mind working with “old” technologies like WordPress, PHP, etc. For you, the outcome is the point.
- You have your own setup: a sufficiently powerful laptop or desktop machine, reliable internet connection, etc.
- You have 2 to 6 hours a week (you set the limit) to donate to our community.
- You might live anywhere within 5 hours of US Eastern time.
If you love building things that our community might deeply value as well as working collaboratively, we’d love your help. We’ll work with you to figure out the right time and effort you want to put in and the responsibilities you might take on. Here are some possibilities:
Potential Responsibilities
Website Maintenance & Enhancements
- Implement small fixes and incremental improvements in WordPress themes, plugins, and layouts.
- Reproduce and resolve bugs, noting what was changed.
- Keep media, assets, and content usage clean and consistent.
Performance & Usability
- Apply practical optimizations that improve load times and responsiveness.
- From big monitors to small phones, ensure pages look great and work well on screens of all sizes.
Functionality & Integrations
- Build, support and maintain existing donation, registration, access controls and other platform functionality
- Configure expected outputs (template-driven pages, email confirmations, integration feeds) so that they function as intended.
- Add entirely new capabilities to our platform, or replace existing ones, in a way that leverages and integrates what’s already in place.
Collaboration & Workflow
- Learn existing solutions and structures then engage proactively and collaboratively with the Director on priorities, strategies, and outcomes
- Work from the shared task list and keep others updated with progress as well as breakage, risks, and other concerns.
- Stay connected: ask for help and seek direction early and often. Don’t be shy about what’s unfamiliar or just not working as expected.
About You
We’re looking for the following skill sets to make this work:
Essential
- Comfortable with PHP or similar language and of course HTML, CSS, and basic JavaScript.
- Experience developing with WordPress (themes, plugins, troubleshooting).
- Basic understanding of version control (Git or similar).
- A preference for leveraging proven and shared solutions vs starting from scratch.
- Excellent collaborations, communications, and teamwork skills
Preferred
- Familiarity with a page builder (Elementor or similar).
- Familiarity with forms plugins (Gravity Forms or similar).
- Awareness of web development best practices (e.g., image sizing, image and script loading, responsiveness, caching).
- Experience with SCSS/SASS frameworks.
- We highly encourage applications from candidates with non-dominant identities and lived experiences, especially those who are Black, Indigenous, or other persons of color, as well as younger candidates.
